FAQ

Why should I choose a chest strap like the TICKR over the built-in heart rate sensor on my GPS sports watch?

Modern fitness watches rely on optical sensors (photoplethysmography) that flash light through your skin to estimate blood flow changes at the wrist. While convenient for baseline tracking, optical wrist readers suffer from lag and tracking drops during intense, sudden changes in effort. When you execute an out-of-the-saddle sprint or smash up a steep singletrack rise, your heart rate spikes instantly, but a wrist watch can take up to 30 to 60 seconds to catch up.

How do I prevent the chest strap from dropping connections or spiking at the start of a ride?

Heart rate chest straps rely directly on moisture to conduct the electrical signals from your skin into the electrode pads on the back of the band. If you put a dry strap on in a cool air-conditioned room or before you begin to sweat, you may experience erratic readings or temporary pairing drops.
