Schlamm und Dreck bietet das ausgefeilte Design der laufrichtungsgebundenen Kette wenig Angriffsfläche. Dank der Verwendung von Shimanos neuer SIL-TEC Oberflächenbeschichtung konnte die Reibung der Kette deutlich reduziert werden. Im Vergleich zu einfachen Beschichtungen handelt es sich bei SIL-TEC um einen speziellen Beschichtungsprozess, der den Abrieb verhindert. Durch eingebaute Fluorpartikel ist die Beschichtung außerdem schmutzabweisend, was die Lebensdauer von allen Antriebskomponenten zusätzlich erhöht.
