To keep it cost-effective and highly reliable, it intentionally strips away extra background hardware features like offline data storage caching (used for swimming), indoor treadmill pacing metrics, and running dynamics sensors (vertical oscillation/ground contact time).

Can I use the Garmin HRM-200 for swimming in the pool or open water?

While the HRM-200 features a ruggedized 3 ATM water resistance rating that handles heavy sweat storms, mud runs, and washing machines perfectly, it is not optimized for swimming. Bluetooth and ANT+ signals cannot travel through water columns, meaning a chest strap requires internal memory to cache your data and sync it back when you climb out.
